My whereabouts of late..

I’ve been pretty quiet in blog land lately and for a few good reasons. First, Lee and I married in April. The kids, my brother and his wife and us headed up to Palm Cove (North Queensland, just north of Cairns). It was a beautiful day, just perfect – morning wedding on the sand, cocktails by the pool at noon, afternoon nap and a lovely meal out.

In May he took me home to the UK to meet the rest of his family and friends. We had a great time and I was made to feel very welcome.

And now I’m pleased to announce...

What's on your bucket list?

Sometime ago I was introduced to the concept of  'The Bucket List'. This is inspired by the film of the same name, starring Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman. The film follows the story of 2 men, Carter Chambers (Freeman) and Edward Cole (Nicholson) who meet in hospital after both being diagnosed with cancer. Carter begins writing a “bucket list”, or things to do before he “kicks the bucket”.

Take care of yourself this winter... naturally

Winter is here and I’ve already faced down a cold and gastro. I visited my lovely naturopath and she reminded me of a few simple things we can do to take care of ourselves naturally. Here’s a little of what we discussed...

What's your wish for 2011?

At the end of each year, I like to take the opportunity to reflect on the year that is ending and set goals of some description for the coming year.

One year I wrote a list of about a hundred things that I wanted to achieve, under carefully constructed heading (personal organisation, finances, full time work, part time business and so on). I crossed a good few things off that list, but given there were so many, there were many that I didn’t cross off and some things that I felt I should do, but didn’t do (and still haven’t).

For last year, I wrote a much more concise list with a top 10 big goals and some smaller ‘pieces’ that would form part of achieving these bigger goals. I didn’t look back at my list until the end of the year, but can you believe I crossed 7 items off my top 10 list (paying off my credit card, finishing my Reiki Masters and teaching a Reiki course). I believe this has to do with the intention that is set when we write down a goal, plan or dream.

This year I have done it a little differently as I want things to be a little different. First I created a collage of how I wanted the year to feel. In fact I found so many images that represent how I want to feel throughout and at the end of the year that I created 2 collages. Images send very powerful messages without us even realising.

Whilst lightly participating in reverb10 late last year, I was prompted to consider my word for the past year (which was planning even though I wanted it to be fulfilment), I began to consider my word for this year. In the end, I selected 4 words for this year, and then 4 corresponding symbols to match.

Creativity, floss and meditation

I plucked this article from the air a while ago. Since then it's been gatherine a little dust while I gather evidence.

But first a question for you. What is it that, after hearing all the evidence and professional advice in the world, gets you across the line?

My hygienist has been on at me for years to floss daily. If I’m honest I’m flat out brushing twice daily. In the end, it wasn’t his insistence or carefully structured spiel about why I should floss every day, it wasn’t a passing comment from a different hygienist about how her kids think it’s gross when she flosses while watching TV (and gets it done every day).

A sense of wonder

Reverb 10 prompt, December 4: Wonder. How did you cultivate a sense of wonder in your life this year?

This year I learned the concept of wondering, instead of forcing. I had the good grace to remember this a few times, but not always.

What I learnt is, when I wonder instead of force, I am more open to my wishes appearing through a different vehicle than I might have pushed for myself, but the result being equally as good or better.

I wondered how the payment to me that I hadn’t received might be sorted, then let it go. The client who had paid the money followed this up religiously until it had been sorted, even though it was my technical glitch that prevented it getting to me in the first place.

I wonder how the children who are not mine will grow up and be as adults and how we’ll be in each other’s lives. I hope I can continue to wonder instead of force here too. I notice from awareness that we want for the children what we didn’t have or do.

But really, I haven’t addressed the question. How have I cultivated a sense of wonder this year?

Why one word makes me melancholy

One word. Encapsulate the year in one word.

This is the first of a month of daily writing prompts supplied by Gwen Bell of the #reverb10 team and project. #reverb10 is about reflecting on this & manifesting what’s next.

Reflecting on this makes me a little sad because I think my one word for 2010 is planning. I wanted 2010 to be about fulfilment.

Planning feels like it’s about looking and a destination not yet reached. Chasing my feet and pushing and trying so hard to make things happen and probably ending up just where I would have if I had allowed it to happen instead with half as much energy spent.

Welcome to my new blog!

The development was complete on this new blog feature a couple of months ago. It’s been sitting with “test” messages ever since waiting for me to start painting its walls with love, or, you know, write something.

I’ve put it off for various reasons– what’s the perfect first blog entry? My newsletters are following a bit of a theme, is it rude to post something starting in the middle? And who’s going to read it anyway? It all comes back to fear.

Now prompted by making a commitment to write something here or in a journal daily for all of December with Gwen Bell and Co’s reverb10, I thought it best to simply begin.
So here it is, my first post. Humble and brief as I dip my toes into online vulnerabilty.
And while I'm at it, here's my commitment to you and me for December - you'll see new content added here at least weekly for the month of December. For a gold star, it will be twice a week. We'll see what develops in the meantime.
While we’re at it, what have you been putting off that you could get started today?
